Lesson 29

It's not just a man singing a song. It's a man who' really thoroughly enjoying himself and making everybody else around him enjoy his work while he was recording. It's a marvellous record..

And one day I arrived up in Birmingham from London and he said to me, "I've got something very interesting to play to you today." And I said, "What's that?" And he said, "Elvis Presley". So I said, "Well, I've heard about Elvis Presley but I've never heard him. Shall I listen to him?"

Michael Ford, the producer, put this record on the turntable and I was immediately flabbergasted by that which I heard. I couldn't believe what I was listening to. Who was this man? Would I get to like him? I certainly didn't like him the first time I heard him.

And it wasn't until I really got involved with Blue Suede Shoes that I suddenly realised what it was about this man that made him totally magical. He started a record off and the moment his voice appeared, and the moment his backing group was there, you knew that you couldn't sit still - you actually had to get up and move to it and move in the most extraordinary fashion.

And he started a whole lot of people rocking around the clock, as it were, in establishments where they normally danced side by side or tummy to tummy. But this was wonderful.
