Lesson 27 Here is Klaus Renft from Berlin. "I'm a rock music man. I play rock 'n' roll, beat, soul und jazz." Eine lange Zeit im Rock 'n' Roll-Geschäft, über 40 Jahre gearbeitet. Und, bin einer ……I've worked in the rock music business for a long time, over 40 years in fact. I've even become one of the most popular cult figures on the German music scene. We call it "Kraut-rock." It's a kind of joke - but really quite rude. British people call Germans "Krauts" which means cabbage, because in Germany we eat a lot of cabbage. It's a bit rude, but we call the kind of music we play "Kraut-rock". I loved Elvis's early work, all the songs he recorded in the 50's - 'Don't be Cruel', 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Tutti Frutti' and 'Jailhouse Rock', of course. Those were the songs that we used to try and copy and we really, really loved them. He was such an idol for us - all that untamed rock music was fantastic.. We really liked 'Jailhouse Rock' and we wanted to experience that feeling of freedom that you could feel in the music. The drumbeats, all the drum riffs, really sent the mood right up to the ceiling. You know rock 'n' roll isn't a question of lyrics, it's a lifestyle, it's freedom, it's a protest against the powers-that-be. That's how we understood it. That was the most important thing for us. |
