Lesson 25

I was his tailor. I took care of him when he was on the road, when he first started out until he ended. I put Elvis's first suit on and his last suit.

It was in the fifties. He was working round at the theatre, at the Lowe's Theatre, and he used to take breaks, come around to the store. I didn't know who this gentleman was - he was looking in the window and I invited him in.I mean, real polite, a real nice guy, a gentleman.

But anyway he looked around. He told me, he said, well you know what, he said, I don't have no money now, he said, but when I get rich I'll buy you out. I said do me a favour, son, I said, don't buy me out, just buy from me. He said I appreciate it very much, so he walked out, unbeknown to me who he was.

But anyway he started coming back into the store, looking round, buying one or two or three pieces, and then he got a deal with Sam Philips of the Sun Recording Company and all at once he come down here, he said I've got a gig, I've got to go on stage, on television. I thought well, that's fantastic, you know, this guy's doing really good. I really still didn't know who he was. He said I have to have some clothes to go on stage. I said, OK, we'll take care of you.
