Lesson 24

(Andrew): I asked somebody if there was any chance of me travelling to go and see Elvis Presley live, which I wanted to in 1972 when he was appearing at Madison Square Gardens. I didn't know that my name would be put in a hat - I just completely forgot about it. I was saying to the wife, "I hope the dream comes true." We both wanted to go and see Elvis. The dream came true in 1990. It was as though a brick had hit us, or something. I don't believe this - you're pulling a fast one. Show me the details and I'll believe it.

(Annette): He turned round and told me, "You'll need a passport." I turned round and said, "What do I need a passport for? I haven't got one." So he turned round and said to me, "You may need a passport," he said, "'cos you're going to Memphis." I said, Eh? I said, "You must be joking." I still can't believe it even now.

(Andrew): It was a nine-day holiday that nobody will ever forget.

(Andrew): The most emotional bit was when we went to Tupelo, the shack that his parents lived in. It was only a bedroom and a kitchen, I think. One long bed, that was all. A few yards away was that chapel that Elvis actually played the organ.

(Annette): I've even placed a rose on the, on his grave and I've sort of got so emotionally upset, choking now, very emotionally upset.
