Lesson 22 I was on tour and I was playing a club called The Bitter End in Los Angeles. It was one of those, kind of, happening nights, you know, where everybody in the business comes in, you know. Joan Baez was there, and Odetta and Cass Elliott and the Mamas and the Papas. In the middle of the show I started to do 'Dixie' and it just continued on, you know, the other two songs just happened to find their way in the song - and it wound up being a trilogy. Oh, it was just electric. It was one of the most electric performances I've every given in my life. People, they didn't start clapping for about ten seconds. I got through with the 'Dixie' part of the song and I looked down and Odetta was sitting down in the front row and she had tears in her eyes. It was a perfect thing for him because of his voice and also that he's from the South and yet it still says all the things that I think he would like to say, you know - that he's not a racist, it was kind of a uniting thing, you know. I think it just kind of touched all those chords in his heart, you know. The last time I was in Ireland I went to a club and they closed all of the clubs over there with it, with the Trilogy. They all stand up - it's like an anthem, you know. It was really strange. It's been a very mystical kind of experience putting together those three pieces. |
