Captain Lawrence Oates went on the famous Scott race to the South Pole in 1911/12. He gave his life trying to save the three remaining members. In his diary Scott told the tale of Oates going outside and saying the immortal words "I am going outside and may be some time". Oates was never seen again and his name went in to folk law.
