School child's geography trade map

Page from the geography notebook of Winnie Newell, 1903. Winnie was at school at the County School in the small Welsh border town of Presteigne. The map shows the areas of England and Wales, drawn by her with what was at the time considered to be the prime production for that place. It is interesting to see how so many areas of the country have changed in just 100 years. Although Winnie's neighbouring Hereford still makes much of the country's cider.

Winnie was part of the Newell family, whose ironmongery business (with accompanying bee-keeping, rabbit breeding and newspaper correspondence, amongst other sidelines, ran for some 200 years. When the last of the family, Winnie's brother Charlie, died in the 1970s, much of the business stock was taken to The Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans. Other items and family effects, such as Winnie's school work, are at The Judge's Lodging, which lies in the same street as their business.
