These tiles covered the floor of what was the refectory at Denny Abbey for the Fransican Nuns who lived on site in the 14th century. After the dissolution of the monasteries the building turned into a barn, but the tiles were preserved under a thick layer of mud and only discovered in the 1960s when English Heritage excavated the area. Little glaze remains on the tiles and each tile would have been adorned with decorative patterns. However, it is quite unique to find the whole floor preserved which harks back to the day when the nuns would communally dine together in this one room and shows there is always something new to be discovered.
