Round Open-Lot Gypsy Vardo (waggon)

The Gypsy vardo or waggon is symbolic of the romantic image of Gypsy travellers roaming freely through the countryside - a stark contrast to many of the negative stereotypes that are also found relating to this ethnic minority community.

The Round open Lot is one of the earliest types of vardo and is particularly common in the Midlands. This type of vardo developed from the pot carts covered in canvas tents used by itinterant salesmen taking wares from local potteries to sell door to door. Many are built onto an older cart base or chasis.

Although many Gypsies and travelling communities no longer live in the traditional waggon, this type is still very popular with settled travellers who like to park them outside their homes as a constant reminder of their heritage.
