Herschel's Telescope

A 7 foot telecope similar to this one was used by William Herschel to sweep the heavens and in the spring of 1781from his garden in Bath he first observed the planet Uranus. He made the telescope, and many others himself in his tiny workshop off the kitchen. You can see a perfect replica of the telescope at the Herschel Museum of Astronomy 19 New King Street. Herschel changed the way astronomers viewed the stars and rightly claimed 'I have looked further into space than any human being did before me.'
