De Holme Family Arms on Stone Shield

The De Holme family arms is carved onto a shield and positioned on the jamb of the arch to the De Holme private chantry chapel in the church.

The armorial shield signified the ownership of this private chapel and the emblem would have been recognised by all sectors of the community even if they were illiterate.

Heraldry evolved as a series of symbols associated with important individuals and families throughout Europe from the Middle Ages. It continues to have importance today as many institutions and families retain their own coats of arms as part of their identity.
