This iron embosser was used in Cardiff's Rhiwbina Garden Village to stamp official documents. The village was set up in the early 20th Century to provide purpose built, affordable housing for Cardiff's workforce. As Cardiff has expanded Rhiwbina has become part of the city and is now a leafy suburb. The donor, Mary, has lived in Rhiwbina Garden Village for over 50 years.
"I should imagine that if I was living in Cardiff where there was at that time heavy industry, the docks, poor living conditions to be actually handed the keys of a house at the foot of the Wenallt mountain I would probably think that I had died and gone to heaven, or that indeed an angel had delivered me from the situation I was in."
The Cardiff Story is a new museum opening Cardiff's beautiful Old Library in autumn 2010. For the first time, Cardiffians and visitors alike will be able to see and hear the city's story through the eyes of its people.
The museum will focus on the stories that give the city its rich and wonderful character. If you have any stories or objects that tell an interesting tale about Cardiff, we'd love to hear from you.
