The first commercial typewriters were produced in the USA in the 1870s and displayed a variety of keyboard layouts and systems of type bars. The Royal Bar-Lock 10 was an American typewriter produced for the European market in 1900. It has the QWERTY keyboard, which we still use, but instead of employing a shift key to create capital letters, it has two sets of letters, both upper and lower case. The Royal Bar-Lock was widely used in government and commercial offices. This particular model was used in a North Acton office until 1957.
