Worcester City Museums hold an important collection of the work of Worcester-born Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923). Leader's paintings sum up the English landscape both gentle and romantic, and he became one of the most popular and expensive artists of his day.
During the First World War, many young men from all over Britain and its colonies were asked to fight (and die) to preserve this vision of England, the rural idyll. Pride in our 'green and pleasant land' seems to be a core part of being English, a theme echoed in the compositions of that other famous Worcester resident Edward Elgar.
