Pedlars, both male and female, were a common sight in the 18th and early 19th centuries as they travelled the countryside selling small household goods, knick-knacks and song sheets to people who could not easily get to towns and shops.

Female pedlar dolls were dressed in the clothes typical of country women - a printed cotton dress, a woollen cape and a black hood or bonnet over a white cap. These dolls were more of a curiosity than a toy, and were usually on display under a glass dome.
