This book invented the Garden City Movement which led to the modern concept of Town PlanningMany Victorians sought solutions to the prevailing poverty around them but few 'utopias' became a reality. However, Ebenezer Howard's vision of Garden Cities: marrying the benefits of town and country, managed by a not-for-profit company, was to influence the lives of millions of people worldwide.
Amazingly, just five years after the book was first published, readers had embraced Ebenezer's idea with their hearts and minds (and wallets!). The equivalent of millions of pounds in today's money was raised to build Letchworth, the world's first Garden City.
Soon there were other Garden City-style developments in Britain and around the world. Furthermore, the concept of planning and building a new town led to the birth of the Town Planning Movement.
Many of the ideas in the book are still relevant today - sustainability, local food, co-operatives, co-housing, recycling, green spaces and healthy eating, to name but a few.
