The Columbian Press was invented in 1813 by George Clymer of Philadelphia (1754 - 1834). This individual model was manufactured by William Carpenter in 1854, and is numbered No 1604. These type of presses appear in many period western films. This particular press was used in Pickering up until the 1960's by local printer Mr. Eric Dewing. Today it is part of the working print room collection at Beck Isle Museum, Pickering and still produces period style posters and flyers.
