Church Architecture - Bell

The unusual Belfry at Tarbat was built in the mid-18th century, by Alexander Stronach, whose family had been master masons in the Tarbat parish for 3 generations between 1634 and 1802.

A new bell (recast from the old one) was purchased by the Heritors (landowners)in 1764 at a cost of £11 Sterling. According to tradition, the timber from which the bell hangs may have come from a ship wreck of the Spanish Armada. Many of the timbers used in the Belfry still have pegs and sockets from their previous use in the construction of boats.
