Housebody Heraldic Window

This is a set of stained glass windows that depicts the shields of various families that the Tempests (owners of Bolling Hall) considered important. Some of these shields are of families that the Tempests were related to by marriage, (such as the Bollings, which is how they owned the building that houses the window). Others are of important families in the area, that the Tempests would have associated with. There are also the shields of the Beauforts and the Tudors, confirming the long-standing Lancastrian sympathies of the Bollings and Tudors.

It was a way of communicating how well connected and influential the Tempest families were, when most people were unable to read.

The windows were considered important enough to the families that owned the house that although they sold off the building to the Bowling Ironworks company in 1816 they took the windows with them!

They were returned in the 1920s after the Hall became a museum and put back on display for all to see.
