The cholera epidemic of the 1830s and 40s was so bad that tiny portable baptismal fonts were used by the clergy to christen dying infants. This font was made at Grainger's Worcester porcelain factory, probably in the 1840s. It is made of parian, glazed on the inside. They are difficult to date accurately as the design did not vary over a long period. Originally the font would have fitted into a specially made silk lined, leather case.
