Giants Refreshed

Mallard and Flying Scotsman were two of the many steam locomotives manufactured at the Doncaster Plant WorksDoncaster Locomotive Works, always known as the Plant, was responsible for the manufacture of some of the most important locomotives in the history of steam railways, including Mallard and Flying Scotsman. The Plant works was historically one of the major employers in Doncaster, employing around 4,500 men and women at any one time, and the locomotives that were manufactured there were exported all over the world. Terence Cuneo depicts the inside of the Crimpsall Paint Shop at the Plant with workers putting the final touches to the reconditioning of two locomotives similar to Mallard and Flying Scotsman. It is estimated that between 1853 and 1963 over 40,00 steam locomotives were overhauled and repaired at the Plant. Cuneo was commissioned to paint Giants Refreshed as a publicity poster for London North Eastern Railways. It was the first of a series of posters which Cuneo designed for LNER leading him to being considered one of the most important artists of the age of steam.
