Indian Made Table Runner

Mr Harrison brought in this handmade item from India to the BBC Suffolk event at Ipswich Museum on Tuesday, 16 February, 2010.

This was handed down from his grandmother but originally belonged to his uncle who was serving in India between 1925 and 1935.

The Maharaja's son was very ill and the Suffolk regiment was nursing him back to health. Mr Harrison's uncle stayed with the boy throughout and was given one of the Maharaja's wives as gratitude. To avoid dishonouring the lady, he set her a task of making this table runner made of silk in 1929, so she could return to her husband.
