Harpoon

Contributed by Milford Haven Museum

It's a fearsome looking weapon but was it ever used? There's doubt as to whether whaling actually took place in Milford. After the American War of Independence, whalers from New England found that trade with Britain was being damaged by import duties. The solution? Set up a whale fishery in Milford Haven. Thousands of barrels of whale oil passed through the town but some historians doubt whether much whaling was actually done in Milford and that the port was a trans-shipment depot for the American whalers.
