Royal Letter from Princess Elizabeth

In 1947, just after the war, on arriving home from work,my mother in laws' neighbour, Granny Fulton, knocked with the news of a large parcel for Ma from Buckinham Palace. Yeah,yeah right said Ma, see you later. A little later Granny Fulton, brayed on the door, `when are you coming for this parcel' she said. So to humour her,Ma and her 3 young sons trooped round & sure enough there it was. A parcel, 26"x18"x18", Stuffed full of goodies. Tinned goods, fresh fruit etc. including a fresh pineapple,which ofcourse they had never seen before. The littlest one,my husband, piped up,`what,s that Ma, a prehistoric monster`? Also included was a letter from Princess Elizabeth,explaining the parcel. She had received, from all over the world , a huge amount of foodstuffs,as wedding presents when she married Prince Phillip in 1947. The lucky recipients were widows with children and being just after the war there was strict rationing,so the parcels were gratefully received. The contents were shared amongst the friends & neighbours,because in those days there was a great feeling of community spirit which is sadly lacking today.
