This beautiful artefact from our world cultures gallery, 'Bringing the World to Plymouth' is intricately carved in ivory. It's known as a tachi and is a type of sword once carried by Samurai warriors. Since the mid 1800s, items like this have been highly desirable for collectors in the west. This item was made for export and dates from the 1890s. It's displayed alongside a number of other items from Japan including a Samurai helmet, clothing and accessories, domestic items and chopsticks!
