Murphy A4 Radio

This is a Murphy 'A4' Radio from 1933. In the first 10 weeks that these sets were available 6,032 were sold at the price of £14-10s The receiver is housed in a plywood cabinet with walnut and rosewood veneer. Frank Murphy had been a war time radio operator before he set up his company to create the first radio sets which were also attractive household items. They were wildly successful; the company was started in 1929 and by the mid 1930s turnover was nearly a million pounds a year!
