Novelty Nut Crackers

Contributed by Antiques Roadshow - Beverley

The stamp on the bottom says 'Erzgebirgische Volkskunst'. These nutcrackers were made in Germany. Families would make these by hand - the father might cut the wood, the children paint them. Now these are made in factories - so these are a record of craft art before mass production set in. They were found in the family loft. The father was a merchant seaman, so maybe these were brought back from one of his tours of duty?
