Tilley Fire Engine

This brightly painted fire engine was manufactured by Tilley of Blackfriars Road, London in the early Victorian period. The first fire engines were usually provided by voluntary bodies or insurance companies until the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Act was passed in 1865. Throughout the mid nineteenth century fire engines were either horse drawn or pulled by men, until steam power came into use later in the century. This engine was used in Banham in Norfolk.
