Dragline Bucket

The Steel bucket will easily hold a large family car and hold upwards of 20 tons of earth in each scoop of the bucket.These draglines and their giant buckets dominated the North Northamptonshire countryside, and they moved millions of tonnes of overburden / earth in their lifetime. The scarred land, clearly visible from aerial photographs, was able to be returned to farming or building use.
Today it is not obvious to those visiting the area just how big quarrying was in this region. The bucket is part of the series of W1400 & W1800 draglines which once worked the opencast mines around Corby. The W1400 & 1800 coding denotes the rough weight of each dragline i.e. W1400 = 1,400 tons, W1800 = 1,800 tons.

One Drag Line excavator named Sundew is very much part of local folklore having made an incredible 13 mile cross country journey, which took nine weeks to complete in the summer of 1974. Its journey was shown to school children across Britain via coverage on Blue Peter, and its name came from the 1957 Grand National Winner in the year it was made.
