This brown leather head guard was worn by Randolph Turpin throughout his boxing career. Randolph was born in Leamington Spa in 1928. With his brothers Dick and Jackie he took up boxing, turning professional in 1946. On 10 July 1951, Randolph made history by beating Sugar Ray Robinson to become Middleweight Champion of the World. He was Britain's first World Boxing Champion since 1891. Randolph instantly became a national hero and when he returned to Leamington a crowd of 18,000 people cheered him at a public reception.
