Town Clerk's Stamp

Contributed by Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum

This stamp belonged to the Town Clerk of Leamington Spa. The embossed stamp depicts the Leamington Spa Coat of Arms and the words: 'TOWN CLERK'S DEPARTMENT / LEAMINGTON SPA.' The stamp was made by Shaw and Sons Limited of London.

Leamington's fast growth in the 19th century created a need for more public services to manage the town. Local government gradually took over responsibility for paving, cleaning and lighting the streets, public health, and the provision of a police force and fire brigade. In 1875 Leamington became a Borough with a Corporation of elected councillors led by the Mayor. This lasted until local government was reorganised in 1974, when Warwick District Council was created.
