Joyce W Cairns RSA - Polish Journey

Joyce Cairns' family was inescapably shaped by the Second World War. This work was realised from a travel bursary that allowed her to research the concentration camps, ghettos, stalaags and prisons of Poland. Polish Journey is part of a body of work called 'War Tourist' that stems from the artist's travels around sites connected to the First and Second World Wars. The works weave a strong personal and universal narrative; they emphasize the forgotten individuals of war and the psychological impact it imparted on her family life and her own consciousness. In Polish Journey a self portrait of the artist is seated in front of 3 hanging dolls and is surrounded by objects that serve as mementoes which echo the personal suffering surrounding the holocaust.
