The pipe bowl shows a ring of football players. This pipe was presented to George William Brusby (1868-1932) by White Star Line shipbuilders (a major British shipping company), where he'd been a captain. (He went on to work in the coast guard service, then started the local White Star Football club, which he ran till World War Two. The team had considerable success. The pipe holds the number 241693, the mark of the factory who made it.

I have a pipe which looks identical to this. It was obviously not meant for smoking because the stem is not fully pierced, and the bowl is far too big, being three inches high and nearly two inches wide. It is clear from the scene on the other side of the bowl that this is a game of rugby, not soccer. Apparently the design was registered on 6th October 1894 by Samuel McLardy of 67 Shudehill, Manchester.
