BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL

Contributed by BBC Leicester listeners

Sandra Fletcher's medal was awarded to her Grandfather, William Arthur Biggs. For many years he was a wonderful fundraiser for St Dunstan's (an independant future for blind ex-servicemen and women), in connection with the Working Men's Clubs in Leicester and he is still affectionately rmembered there. He was awarded the B.E.M. in August 1948. In all he had raised some £20,000 for their organisation.

He lost his right eye in childhood, and later lost the use of his left eye in 1917, however, despite being blind he wanted to play his part in the war. He enlisted in 13.4.16 to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps until 22.1.1919.

St Dunstan's helped him in his later life, therefore he felt thet he would like to help them.
