Golf Medal

This was the first medal ever presented for winning The Open Championship, the oldest of golf's four Majors.The Open Championship, inaugurated in 1860, is the oldest of golf's four Majors, and remains arguably the most prestigious championship in golf, annually attended by hundreds of thousands of spectators and watched by millions worldwide.

Tom Morris Junior (1851-1875) won this medal in the 1872 Championship. Having already won in 1868, 1869 and 1870, Morris took possession of the original winner's prize - the Challenge Belt - according to the first rule of the competition. After The Open was held in abeyance for a year, Morris again won in 1872. However, as the new Claret Jug trophy was not ready for presentation, he received this gold medal; the first medal presented to The Open winner. Since then, every Open Champion has also received a gold medal.

Both Morris Junior and his father Tom Morris (1821-1908) are renowned in the history of golf, with both hailing from St Andrews. At 17, Morris Junior remains the youngest Open Champion. His father Tom Morris also won The Open four times, and is the oldest Champion at 46 years old.
