This trench periscope was submitted by Elaine Etherington, it belonged to a member of her family, probably Leonard Etherington and was used during the 1st World War. An inscription on the periscope tells us it was made by JW Lees and Company, 63 Whitworth Street, Manchester.
A trench periscope, as the name suggests would have been used by soldiers in the trenches to enable them to see over the top, but still remain hidden.
It's a simple metal tube, covered in leather with a mirror, set at an angle at each end.
