James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred Wight OBE a British veterinary surgeon and writer. Alf Wight started writing in 1966 at the age of 50. In 1969 he wrote If Only They Could Talk, the first of a now famous series based on his working life as a vet. The book was published in the United Kingdom in 1970, but originally sales were slow. St Martins Press arranged to have the first two books published as a single volume in the United States. The resulting book, titled All Creatures Great and Small, was an overnight success, spawning numerous sequels, movies, and a successful television adaptation.
The World of James Herriot, based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire is a veterinary science museum which pays tribute to the world famous author. Guests visit the original home and practice of James Herriot which has been restored back to depict life in the 1940s
