The Bryce Cup

The Bryce Cup is a very rare example of York Silver, it is named after and was made by Francis Bryce during the reign of King Charles I between 1636 and 1637. It is engraved with the initials H over W M on the base which indicates that it was a wedding cup. The Cup is believed to have been made for a moderately prosperous Merchant couple and now is in the ownership of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York. This highlights York's importance as a bustling mercantile Port during the Stuart Period, whilst also illustrating the production of ceremonial cups for Weddings which was practiced across Europe.
