A Piece of Transatlantic Cable

This was guaranteed by Tiffany & Co on Broadway, New York, in 1853. It was given to the contributor by his grandparents and was bought in the States. Several attempts were made to lay the cable during the 1850s, and by the end of the 19th century, a sophisticated network of cables under the Atlantic had been established.
