This is the view from the top of the Gasholder, looking down onto the second Gasholder, which was built in 1895. This is an underground Gasholder and held 40,000 cubic feet of gas.
It was necessary to build this when homes were able to have gas lighting, heating and cooking and demand for gas was much greater.
Gas in homes was a luxury, no more candles or lighting a coal range to cook on.
This was state of the art 1890's style!
