X Factor: Critical View

Does the TV talent contest benefit or harm the music industry

Following the announcement of this year's X Factor winner at the weekend, 6 Music News has been taking a critical look at the value of The X Factor and whether it is a good or a bad thing for the music industry.

It was the former painter and decorator Matt Cardle who won this year's contest, which means he has also signed a £1m recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment.

However, the most surprising aspect of this week's result is the fact that the song Matt will now release, which will also enter the race to be Chistmas Number 1, has actually been written by Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro.

The Biffy track, Many Of Horror , is to be covered by Matt Cardl but the X Factor winner's version will be named after that song's subtitle, When We Collide

There's no doubting the financial benefits for Biffy Clyro. In less than 24 hours since the announcement, Biffy Clyro's original version of this X Factor single went from 197 in the itunes chart to 16.

With this kind of knock on effect 6 Music is asking; is the X factor a good thing for the industry or a bad thing?
