Puppets Storm Proms
Alex Turner and Miles Kane wow fans in Liverpool.
24 October 2008 - The Last Shadow Puppets proved that they could live up to any amount of hype with their performance at the Electric Proms in Liverpool last night. The duo played the ornate Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and romped through an hour long set that bursted with energy and enthusiasm.
Tracks from their Mercury nominated debut album were brought to life by a full string accompaniment from the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, who helped create that distinctively 60's sound which has become synonymous with the band.
Members of the Coral, the Rascals and The Arctic Monkeys were all in the crowd as was Echo and The Bunnymen's Ian McCulloch and even the government minister for Culture, Media and Sport, Andy Burnham.
Miles seemed ecstatic to be playing in his hometown and even Alex was chattier than usual making jokes with the crowd and trying to encourage more applause. Both wore matching suits and ties which along with their floppy haircuts resulted in a very retro look.
Guest appearances were made by 'their friend Rosie' who joined the band for a duet on My Mistakes Were Made For You. And during the encore, half the orchestra took to mikes at the front of the stage for a mass sing along.
A cover of the Beatles track 'She's So Heavy' really brought the house down, although there were standing innovations almost from the word go.
Fans after the gig didn't have a bad word to say about the show: "It was like being back in time and they put on a real show. It was a proper old knees up. I thoroughly enjoyed it," said one punter.
Others were impressed with the string backing and the general feeling amongst the liverpudlian fans was that the Electric Proms were all the better for venturing outside of london:
"I've never been to anything with an orchestra so I really enjoyed that. It's also good that it's in Liverpool. It's the capital of culture so it's good that people know what we're doing up here.
"There are as many people living in the North as down South so why shouldn't they bring big events up here."
