Keane

New Keane track

The band are giving away a free mp3 of a track off their new album
04 August 2008 - The countdown has ended on the Keane website and they’ve made a brand new track available for download from their official website.

Spiralling is the first taste of their 3rd album Perfect Symmetry, which is out on October 13.

Keane told fans on the their newsletter that they'd, "ignored the rules of good taste," in recording sessions for this album.

Speaking to 6music frontman Tom Chapman said this single was a chance for fans to see their change in direction: "We finished the record probably a bit sooner than we expected," he said.

"We'd been producing it ourselves, so we weren’t sure how long it was going to take - six months or a year or 3 years. But we've pretty much finished it now and we just wanted to get some music out to show to people how different things are and where we've gone."

The band said they started the journey for this album in Paris and took a night train to Berlin, where they say everything came together in an, “avalanche of experimentation” that took them by surprise.

We can now hear the first fruits of that through a free download - available via their official website Keanemusic.com.

The result is a very upbeat sound, by Keane standards, some very 80s style production, and a spoken word section where Tom enquires: "Did you wanna be a winner, did you wanna be an icon?"

He explained how the track evolved: "The song started with the guitar riff that you hear at the beginning. I guess it’s about human endeavour and how can that can often lead to failure. In some ways it’s quite a desperate song but musically it’s just very loud and very funky."

They aren't the first to give away their music for free with Coldplay giving away Violet Hill from their hit album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends recently.

Spiralling is only available for download for a week.

Hear from the band themselves, when they talk to Steve Lamacq from 4pm today.

Thanks for the info 6Music! Keane are incredible! The 'modern' 80's feel that Spiralling exudes makes me want to hear more. I can't wait to have my hands on that album!
