Spiritualized electrify
A full review of the closing night at Summer Sundae
13 August 07 - When someone serves you up a weekend festival that begins with the sudden death of Tony Wilson, there's no more emotive a finale headliner than Jason Pierce's Spiritualized Acoustic Mainlines.Never taking us too far above the level of emotional despondency and anguish, we were whirled through a set containing the works of spaceman 3, early spiritualized, mid-spiritualized as well as future spiritualized.
Highlights were often and varied. In particular the way that the song Anything More was worked into the title track of Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space which was then merged with Elvis' I Can't Help Falling in Love, the spiritualized version of which was removed from the bands third album due to a rights issue.
The Spaceman 3 classic Walking With Jesus received rapturous applause but it was the more sombre tracks such as the bands second single Feel So Sad and the heavily underrated classic Broken Heart that really shone through.
The crowd were divided somewhat, there were those (ever so rightly) staunch fans really soaking up the idea of acoustic mainlines balanced against those who were unfamiliar and thus couldn't get to grips with the idea that this was to close the festival for 2007.
