6 PICKS: Best of the veterans and the ones to watch

Ash

Ash

Perhaps the pre-eminent festival band of their generation, when it comes to playing in the Great British outdoors, Ash have been there, done it and worn the neckbrace (Mark Hamilton, Reading 2002).

But as the musical embodiment of summer, there is no finer place to see them than at Glastonbury – the festival they love so much they once played it twice in the same weekend, stepping in with a last-minute headline slot at the mud-logged 1997 do, despite having already played earlier in the weekend.

They’ll be hoping for better weather this time though, because when the sun is shining and the hits are flowing, there’s no finer band on God’s earth than Tim Wheeler’s crew when it comes to encapsulating the delights of rocking without a roof.

Oh yeah, it’s the start of the summer indeed.

Magic Numbers

Magic Numbers

If The Magic Numbers didn’t exist, then Michael Eavis would surely have to invent them.

Because, if ever there was a band genetically engineered to encapsulate Glasto’s legendary “vibe”, then surely it is these four cheery chaps and chapesses (two pairs of siblings, no less) whose very name will resonate with those saucer-eyed types hell-bent on constructing a few 'magic' 'numbers' of their own up in the green field.

Furthermore, their debut album fizzes with bittersweet, summer-tinged tunes in the grand tradition of Teenage Fanclub, Gram Parsons and, er, The Mamas & The Papas, while their uplifting gigs are already so legendary they were headlining London’s Forum before they’d even released a proper single.

At Glasto, on the John Peel Stage, expect them to go supernova – no rocket science required.

Maximo Park

Maximo Park

A first summer on the outdoor circuit for these Geordie lads but not, one suspects, their last.

Armed with a barrel-load of angular pop tunes, a superb debut album ('A Certain Trigger'), some snazzy shirts and a rep for frantically sweaty live shows, they might just be this year’s Franz Ferdinand (who, lest we forget, conquered Glasto from a mere mid-afternoon slot last time round).

At the very least, by bombarding us with the urban angst so prevalent on Top 20 hits "Graffiti" and "Apply Some Pressure", they will provide a useful public service over at the John Peel Stage by reminding us all of what we’re 'missing' back in the city, sending the smog-free Glasto masses off to Mrs Miggins’ Mung-Bean Burger Stall up in the Naked Beardoes Arena with a spring in their step.

Avanti!

New Order

New Order

As with most things, New Order have “history” with Glastonbury. They were there in 1981, when the festival was dragged kicking and screaming into the vaguely modern era (ie, for the first time, it wasn’t compulsory for artists to have a flautist and a mime artist on stage with them).

And they were there again in 1987, playing a set that was somehow utterly brilliant and yet teetering on the brink of collapse all at the same time.

This year, they’re back where they belong (Saturday night, Main Stage, since you’re asking), when they’ll doubtless be showing the likes of Keane and Coldplay that there’s nothing new about this looking windswept and wistful lark.

Unlike the above, however, they’ll also be making the “refreshed” elements of the crowd dance their way into oblivion. More history in the making? Here’s hoping …

Rilo Kiley

Rilo Kiley

Miss Minogue has sadly had to cancel but there will still be one Kiley on stage at Glastonbury this year.

The Rilos have been around long enough to play Glasto before - last year, to about two dozen people, first thing in the morning, in the rain – but can expect a rather warmer welcome this time around, now that their superb third album 'More Adventurous' has established them as the swishest 'new' pop combo in the cosmiverse.

The opportunity to see them on the John Peel Stage, sashaying through "Portions For Foxes" in close proximity to some actual, proper countryside foxes should not be missed, while the sight of frontwoman Jenny Lewis murmuring “It’s a hit …” will be enough to make even the most cider-addled indie boy swoon.

Never mind the 'other' Kylie, it’s odds-on that, by the end of the weekend, you won’t be able to get this lot out of your head.

The Tears

The Tears

This year will see Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler return to the Vale Of Avalon together for the first time since Suede’s legendary appearance back in 1993.

Their headline set on the second stage was the show where they finally proved the tag “best new band in Britain” was much more than just hype.

But, much more than that, as they debuted "Still Life" in the encore and provided the festival with a rare moment of beauty amidst the chaos, they proved that cutting edge alternative music could conquer the wide-open spaces – and Glastonbury bills have been all the better for it, ever since.

This year, their new venture The Tears have a similarly poised headline slot on The John Peel Stage and the assembled Beautiful Ones will be hoping that lightning does, indeed, strike twice (although not literally, please, weather gods).

Mike Glastonbury
Help. I'm still stuck in the Beckets.

David Goddard, Tollesbury, Essex.
Babyshambles in the Left field on Saturday night were great. So far I hve only heard people slag off the Friday other stage performance, the left field gig was well hidden and fantastic.

mike Glastonbury
Yes Graham, Flipron did play. 5 times in fact. The Drift stage experienced some changes to their schedule mainly caused by a spot of rain and some licensing issues but the Croissant Neuf gig was on time. The Tadpole stage and L.V. Chapel stage gigs were only a little later than advertised. So I'm told. I was stuck in the Beckets.

Graham - Kent
Flipron? Did they play? I thought they got stuck down the pub in Glasto High St and missed their slot....

Bev - Middlesborough
Saw Sonic Audio on Friday and stumbled across another gig on Sunday in the Crown by the Other Stage - Awesome! Them dudes can play! Absolutely amazing.

Richard, Manchester
The bands you menetioned were alright but nothing special. The Broken Family Band on the Avalon were the best surprise of the festival. I'd never seen them before and I am staggered that you haven't made more of fuss about them. Their lyrics are relevant, cleaver and acerbic and they had some of the best tunes of any band at the festival. Come on 6Music stick your necks out next time and pick stuff that people won't normally hear.

Sultana, London
Countermine were one of the best bands! They played just after The Boyfriends who were also great, and I swear their take on soft rock put bands like Keane and Embrace to shame. Can't wait to hear more from them! The best thing about the great pixie festival is mix of amazing old and new music, and the fact that the new band stage is now called the John Peel stage couldn't be more fitting. He certainly made my weekend special!

alex berryman bedford
The Subways were quality again

Idwal, Worsestershire
Inturpol wuz gwd, licked them vewry so. Why carnt piaple spell proprerly in these comments page? Symptom of the modren age? Hmmm I wonder

Jim - Lincoln
What is wrong with the BBC ? The Kings of Glasonbury were back this year - The Levellers !! Have we seen any BBC coverage of what will have undoubtedly been the best set of the festival - answer, no ! Instead we had to endure awful sets from the likes of New Order - (great records but an awful live set). The Levellers also produce great records but also give an electric, energetic and awesome live set. Tracks such as World Freak Show, The Boatman, 15 Years, One Way, Far From Home, Sell Out, Just The One, What A Beautiful Day..................... Come on BBC, give us some highlights of The Levellers. The Return of the Kings !!

Diziet, Worcester
I feel vindicated, reading what someone has said about New Order being dreadful and agree with everything this person said. How can anyone rate them? How did they ever get a recording contract? They can't sing, they make an appalling racket and they're about as musical as a bunch of pre-schoolers who think they're making music with pans and wooden spoons. Ok, I sound like my parents. But for real ingenuity, musicianship, talent, arrangements, lyrics and beauty of voice, Rufus Wainwright takes some beating. Thank goodness I'm not the only one who's bewildered by New Order's popularity.

Mike Doncaster
Just Saw "New Order" on the Live Web Cast from Glasto & they Showed The Likes of The Tears-Babyshambles Interpol Etc That No-one Comes Close To The "Salford Masters Of Indie-Stomping Rock!!!! Hooky Could Twist Little Pete From Babyshambles Round His Bass Guitar!!! Dance Dance Dance Dance To The Radio!!! Hooky=Rock God!!!

lucy wilkins, bath
pity the dears, having to go on at same time as brian wilson, tough call but their amazing set at wireless on fri night ( also at same time as new order...) bodes well for them..i support new music so i will be there...!! (who books this band to appear at same time as wilson and new order...doh!!

Rose Sheffield
Noone mentioned DRESDON DOLLS! Are you people crazy? Who could argue with punk cabaret And Bright Eyes is the the suprime overlord of Rilo Kiley. R/K supported Bright eyes at i gig i went to although good. Not as good as Conour and co.

Matt, Leeds
Kaiser Chiefs are the best band out at the moment hands down! There album is quite possibly the best i have even herd and the fact they are from my neck of the woods puts them at the top of the pile for me!

ruby/bournemouth

Rich, Cardiff.
There is some great music hidden away in the line-up by the likes of Client and Speedy J. However I expect the chances of the BBC giving then any coverage at all are next to zero.

Mark West Ealing
Gee, what do all these bands have in common? White middle class. My highlight hopefully will be M.I.A if she can repeat her album live.

Richard Birmingham
naaaaaaaaaaah washed out New order, Magic Numbers Cissy hippy Music, Ash???? The word is..................... INTERPOL!

Malcolm Ellis, Leeds.
I'm really glad to see Vib-Gyor are gonna be playing at Glastonbury. They really blew me away when I saw them playing in Leeds and on BBC radio Leeds last Sunday. Hope to see them on the Late n Live stage Saturday 4pm. Check em out if your near that stage.

Rich, Manchester
Okay, so I like the doves, killers, ash and all that...However The Tears are the best band on the planet...Brett Andersons falsetto out does Chris Martin and Thom Yorke and anyone else for that matter plus the muic is simply spell binding genius!

Cliff Andover
Always look forward to Glastonbury, such a diversity of music. But if your really into guitar work you should check out Nick Harper in the leftfield tent on Friday. It's simply mind boggling, and a nice voice too.

jack manchester
check out autokat on sunday night, another manchester crew with great potential

Naomi, Wexford, Ireland.
The GO! Team, MIA and Maximo Park are a must see got me.

Matt, Manchester
24hr love are playing in the live and loud tent at 5pm on the friday - its my band and its a shamelss plug but hope some of you can come! The tent is by the orange chill area and there's loads of others playing.

Glenn (keyboards) RedHandBand
Thanks 'Rachel Yeovil, Somerset' for your kind comments. We WILL rock and give you something to enjoy and remember. You can also catch us at the Late and Live stage (between the Pyraimid and the Other satge) Sun 8pm. Come say hello.

Mat, Manchester
Forget New Order, Ash, The Tears, The Killers etc... Babyshambles are gonna be the band of the Summer.

kash-Bradford
ian brown, time is my everything, c'mon give it up, no-one comes close to the legend Ian Brown

Noddy , nowhere's ville
I thought it was all about the vibe man! Who cares what bands are on. After all, you all bought yer tickets before you had any idea who'd be on. The whole things a coprate sham now anyway :-)

Buzz, Lincoln
Check out Eatstatic and the Ozric Tentacles in the east and west coast dance tents. If you like Orbital and general full on electronic mayhem don't miss eatstatic. The Ozrics are a bit more trippy with the odd Flute & Guitar thrown in for good measure. What a sound!

Peter Cardiff
Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club are just about the most storming act I have seen live in the last 5 years. Relatively well known in Ireland but not much outside. Jazz, swing, rock n roll, soul, Tom Waits all rolled up in a horn drenched set of blistering quality. Please feature them from the Accoustic Stage on Saturday. Many thanks.

Ian, Peterborough
Make sure you see The Tears on the Peel Stage. Whoever else you see during the festival will be blown away by the sheer quality of the music and amazing stage swagger and chemistry btween Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler. Also keep your eyes open for the living embodiment of Animal from the Muppets in Mako Sakamoto.

GIll, Yorkshire
GO and Watch the Levellers on Saturday.. Have seen them recently and they are still the best british live band this country has!!! And will be the best act at Glastonbury this year without a doubt..

Russ, Manchester
Doves are my tip for 'best glasto moment'. Top band with amazing tunes.

the dude
my 5: Roots Manuva, Roy Ayres, Primal Scream, Ian Brown, White Stripes Why are QOTSA not playing!! They are the best live band ever.

Donald ,Brighton.
Never mind The Killers ,check out the Kills ,Sunday eve in the John Peel tent.Pure energy rock n' roll.

Alice , Bath
Blackbud on The Other Stage on Friday. Brilliant young band

Chris Notts
watch the wailers on jazz world stage, what better way to spend a sunny afternoon?

Jo Manchester
Leftfield stage Friday approx 7pm (opening band) - go & see Sonic Boom 6 - the most interesting & exciting band to play the whole of the festival!

Ewan, Stirling
Go and see The Boyfriends on the Peel stage. Also go and see Martha Wainwright, Interpol, Secret Machines, Art Brut, The Futureheads....oh, too many more to mention you lucky, lucky people!

Catherine, Accrington
Go see I AM KLOOT Saturday, Acoustic Stage!!!!!!

Malcom Tent, Bath
Would somebody please tell me what I'm missing with the whole New Order thing? Every time I see them live somewhere the guy cannot carry a single note - what's that all about then?! So they made a couple of decent tunes once a very long time ago, so what? Get over them; they're old and they're a crock of s**t. Go seek out new talent at Glastonbury, there's absolutely tonnes of it. The bloke out of Ash has problems live too, so what's all the fuss? A decent live band means exactly that, anyone can sound great with plenty of studio time. If you're going to listen to Ash and New Order (yawn) then for godssakes stay at home with yer CD collection otherwise you'll be bitterly disappointed. Onwards and upwards, my friends!

Louise - Leicester
Sonic Audio!!!!!!!!!! These guys play with The Happy Mondays and their mixture of indie-dance is going to Blow the Stage Apart!! Leftfield stage late on Friday night...

Jo, London
Alabama 3 have to be a must see. They've had great reviews and you gotta venture into the jazz stage at some point!

Andy - Rugby
A good choice - Rilo Kiley are definately pick of the bunch - entertained us in the rain - in the morning last year & were brilliant .In the warmer & drier environment of the John Peel Stage they will be pick of the weekend no doubt . Looking forward to seeing Rufus too !!

John, Taunton
A band called RACE are definately worth catching on the Thursday evening at the Jazz World stage....It is going to be special....

Steve, Bristol
Great bands all of them though I can't comment on Maximo Park 'cos I haven't heard them - but I'll keep an ear out. But look and listen out for Red Hand Band on the Other Stage. They're not signed up yet but they're gonna be thats for sure. Watch this space.

Rachel Yeovil, Somerset
Glastonbury is going to be ace!!! Can't wait. Stoney are playing there, they've had some air play on radio 6. I'm gonna be there! Haven't seen them yet but heard awesome reports from my housemates, who also happen to think Mark Stoney is something of a fitty

Steve , Taunton
Do youselves a favour and see Rufus Wainwright on Sunday on the Other stage. He is a great new original talent.

N. PEEPER, CHESTER
MY 6 PICKS - DOVES, DOVES, DOVES, DOVES, DOVES, DOVES

London
What about Art Brut? saw them at primavrea sound in Barcelona and they were excellent, the singer was great on phills show aswell

Mike Osiowy, Kitchener ON Canada
I second the Dead '60s, they were incredible and absolutely blew away Garbage as their opener for their N. American tour. Awesome energy and very very fun...

len Coventry
Line-Up against the wall for the firing squad! We need more Rock, Classic Rock, Hard rock, whatever rock you want to call it! Sedimentary Rock! Where's The Quo, Velvet Revolver, Crucified Barbara, Tokyo Dragons, Slayer ?? Glad to See Countermine and Ash and Billy Bragg once again are all playing.

Mark , huddersfield
gotta say your realy missing out if you miss black bud there a quality band to ease you into the festie this time next year they'll be playing sunny mid afternoon sets in many a festival.

Jo Sinclair, Bristol
If there's one band to see this year, it has to be the Dead 60's. A young fresh style, reminiscent of the 80's rather than the tired 60's, whose influences include Echo and the Bunneymen, The Clash with a little ska thrown in for good measure. They'll be featured on C4's Popworld on Sunday and are going to be massive. Checkout their website at www.thedead60s.com

Neil's Child, Cambridge
How can you POSSIBLY ignore Bright Eyes? I don't know anyone who hasn't seen Ash live already, they're a good live band but their new material's a far cry from the oldies which I've no doubt will be relegated from their sets now. Suede I grant you were very good, but The Tears are so dull they make me want to chew my own arm off. Anyone's time would be far better employed seeing The Dears and Interpol.

Samuel from Falmouth
British Sea Power in the Leftfield Tent! Most underrated British band around.

Steve Mansbridge, Glastonbury
Surely your best of the vetrans should include the legendary Terry Reid, who returns this year after 34 years. Yes Terry was, in fact, the first act on at the first proper Glastonbury Festival; Glastonbury Fayre 1971 (the 1970 small affair doesn't really count). Terry must also surely be one of the most underrated British artists ever bar none.

David Brighton
If you want to check out two amazing bands, head to the leftfield stage and see the Mutts and Teasing Lulu. Have seen them both and they are amazing!

terri, newcastle upon tyne
can't wait, only 27 sleeps and counting

mike Glastonbury
What about Flipron? Croissant Neuf and Lost Vaugeness. You know you love them.

Have your say
