Villagers in St Nicholas, Pembrokeshire, had to build makeshift dams because of flooding

People in a Pembrokeshire village were forced to build makeshift dams in the early hours to protect their homes from flooding.

Residents say the main road through St Nicholas near Fishguard turned into a river at about 0400 GMT.

Firefighters said they were called to deal with flooding at two properties in the village.

Resident Tina Davies said she used bricks, scaffolding and breeze blocks to shore up the gateway at her home.

"It was like a river with the water coming off the fields - it was pretty full-on. My sandbags were washed away," she said.

"Unfortunately people further down into the village were affected far worse than we were."

Another resident, Gaynor McMorrin said: "The water was coming down the road very fast."

She said it had left stones, pebbles, grit and mud across the carriageway.

The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the area at 0515 GMT and pumped water out of a house.

They then went to another where a garage had flooded.

Pembrokeshire council workers have also been to the village to help with clearing-up.
