Over 100 jobs are at risk at a cash-and-carry store in Swansea after managers announced they were proposing to close the store.

Makro in Swansea Industrial Estate is starting a consultation period with its 112 employees and union at the store.

A spokeswoman for the firm blamed "difficult trading times and a need to reduce costs" for the move.

The news comes as figures due to be released later are expected to show over 100,000 are unemployed in Wales.

Makro said in a statement: "We can confirm that unfortunately, due to difficult trading times and a need to reduce costs we are proposing to close the Swansea store.

"The proposal, which is now subject to consultation with employees and their representatives, will affect the 112 staff employed at the store."

The company has two other stores in Wales, near Cardiff and in Deeside, and neither of these will be affected, a spokeswoman added.

If the closure proposal goes ahead, the store will cease trading on 31 May.

Shop workers' union Usdaw said it was in consultations with the company.
