Fans are being encourage to line the streets for the bus parade |
Swansea City FC will celebrate promotion to the Championship with an open-top bus parade through the city. Roberto Martinez' Swans have been invited to a civic reception at the Guildhall on Monday. They will depart from the old Vetch Field ground at 18.30 BST and make their way down West Way towards the Grand Theatre and onto St Helen's Road. The route recreates the last open-top parade staged in 1981 when the team won promotion to the old First Division. Despite losing 1-2 to Yeovil Town in front of over 18,000 supporters at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, the Swans were crowned champions assuming Leeds United are unsuccessful in their bid to recoup the 15 points they were deducted at the start of the season. Whatever the outcome of the Yorkshire club's arbitration hearing, Swansea will return to football's second tier for the first time for 24 years. Swansea City director David Morgan said the invitation for the open-top parade and civic reception had come from the city council. "We will leave from the Vetch field for a bit of history," he added. "It's nice the council recognises the importance of the football club." Swansea Council's head of culture and tourism, Iwan Davies, said: "Swansea City's promotion to The Championship is a credit to everyone involved in the club and will be a huge boost for the city. "The team has always put Swansea on the map and now the city will have a side playing second tier football for the first time in over 20 years. "This is wonderful news for the players, the fans and the local economy. "Many supporters of some of the largest football clubs in the land will soon be coming to Swansea for the first time and attractions such as Gower and Liberty Stadium are sure to make a long-lasting impression."
