Three of the four schoolgirls badly injured in a house fire in Llanelli last month have been taken off the critical list, doctors have said.

Kira Evans, 14, Kimberly Patterson, 15, and Nadine Fardon, 14, are now classed as "serious but stable."

Kira's sister Anya, 15, is still very poorly and has been transferred to a specialist paediatric unit in Cardiff.

The sisters' family said they were praying that it would not be too long before her condition also improved.

All four girls were in the house on Old Castle Road when the blaze broke out on 17 December.

Doctors at Swansea's Morriston Hospital burns unit, where they have been treated, said at the time they would face a long road to recovery.

Anya has now been transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff so she can be put on specialist equipment to improve her breathing.

Morriston burns consultant Tom Potokar said equipment of this kind was sometimes used to help premature babies, whose lungs are not yet fully mature, to breathe.

"We have been in close contact with our colleagues in Cardiff and we are working closely together to provide the best possible care for Anya," he added.

The family of the sisters said they would continue to keep vigil over both girls.

In a statement they said: "All we can think about are the girls and we are praying for them to recover.

Hope and pray

"None of the family could even think about Christmas, it passed us by completely.

"We are obviously extremely relieved that Kira's condition has improved, but we know she is still very ill and that she faces a long recovery.

"We can only hope and pray that it is not too long before her sister's condition improves and we hope this specialist equipment will help her."

The cause of the fire which gutted the first floor of the mid-terraced house is still being investigated.

Meanwhile, almost 2,000 has been raised so far for the Evans family by well wishers in Llanelli.
