 Visteon will continue to prepare its Swansea plant for sale |
About 175 people are to lose their jobs at the Visteon car components plant near Swansea, the company has said. Management said the job losses resulted from Ford's decision to close a foundry in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, which Visteon supplies with parts.
The company said the people losing their jobs would be temporary workers and those wanting voluntary redundancy.
The timescale of the job losses is not known. Visteon is continuing to repair the Fabian Way plant for sale.
The factory makes axles and brake systems.
Opportunities
A company spokesman said: "During 2006, Visteon's Swansea plant advised its intention to exit the remaining brake machining business during this year as it is not profitable.
"Ford has announced that it plans to cease casting operations at Leamington plant at the summer shutdown.
"Consequently, [the] Swansea plant will progressively work to transition out of the brakes business during the period between now and shutdown."
The spokesman added that Visteon was working to identify opportunities for former Ford employees to transfer back to the company.
Ford announced the closure at Leamington Spa on Thursday, with the loss of 365 jobs.
The facility, which makes parts for the firm's vehicles, will shut in July after the company decided it had become uncompetitive.
